The Commission on Population and Development Caraga extends its call to avoid premarital sex to all teenagers and youth to prevent unwanted pregnancy especially Valentine’s Day.

According to the World Health Organization, Adolescent mothers aged 10–19 years face higher health complications and systemic infections than women aged 20–24 years. Additionally, some 3.9 million unsafe abortions among girls aged 15–19 years occur each year, contributing to maternal mortality, morbidity and lasting health problems

An early pregnancy may precipitate a premature and instable marriage. An early and premarital birth creates a family form with a high probability of needing public assistance.

The low educational levels and large family sizes of teen child bearers increase their probability of depending on public assistance later on.

Director Makinano added that behavioral problems mixed up with the lack of parental supervision and limited support mechanisms resulted in risky sexual activities among young people.

Meanwhile, Dir. Makinano advises couples to be more aware and critical with their decisions during the stint of Valentine’s Day, instead, he encourages parents and couples to spend the holidays together with their children as a sign of good parenting
